Marcia  Griffiths

THE QUEEN OF REGGAE

I was honoured to be commissioned to create a drawing of the Queen of Reggae, Marcia Griffiths, by the great King Jammy, Claire Angel, and Jack Reuben. From the moment I received the project, I felt the weight and significance of capturing such an iconic figure.

I was given a selection of beautiful photos of Marcia to choose from, but one image spoke to me immediately. There was something in her expression—a quiet contentment, a glow—that drew me in. I spent a day and a half with the photo, listening to Bob Marley & The Wailers, letting the music and her image guide me. During this time, I felt a strong spiritual connection with Marcia, as if her presence were guiding my hand.

Before beginning the drawing, I immersed myself in her world. I listened to her music, past and present, and read about her life and career. I saw how deeply her role in the music industry had impacted so many people, and I felt a profound respect for her legacy. All this inspiration fuelled the creation of my piece.

The drawing itself is one of a kind—a true Tsittra creation. I started with pencil charcoal, using its raw, textured quality to build the foundation of the piece. But I knew it needed something more. By incorporating strands of colourful silk thread, I brought energy and movement to the work, giving it a sense of vibrancy that reflects Marcia’s freeness of spirit. The silk threads accentuate the charcoal, creating a 3-D effect that makes the piece feel alive, as though Marcia herself is glowing from within.

As I worked, I stayed focused on keeping the piece organic and real, without getting too caught up in over-defining the details. For me, the goal wasn’t just to replicate her image but to capture her essence—her contentment, her elegance, and her aura.

When I look at the finished piece, I remember the process—the spiritual connection I felt while gazing at her photo, and the way her eyes seemed to give me approval. From a distance, the picture draws you in, but as you come closer, the intricate details reveal themselves. That’s where the magic lies. This drawing is more than an image to hang on a wall; it’s a celebration of Marcia’s spirit and her legacy.

The final stage of the process was all about colour and composition. The silk threads integrate seamlessly with the charcoal, creating a glow and texture that give the piece its “wow” factor. I even added a touch of abstraction around her chest, which adds depth and emotion. Standing back and staring at the finished work, I see Marcia looking back at me—her beautiful smile, the sparkle in her eyes, her quiet elegance.

My hope is that this drawing brings peace and harmony to all who view it, just as it did to me while creating it. It’s not just art—it’s a reflection of her life and her spirit.

When I sum it all up, there is one word that comes to mind: Exquisite.
